Dividing Integers

Objective: Divide integers

Vocabulary: quotient, divisor, dividend, divisor, remainder indeterminant
Division is repetitive subtraction.  Division is the opposite of multiplication (inverse operation).  Division is an operation where a number is being broken down into smaller equal-size groups of numbers.  The number being divided is called the dividend, and the number doing the dividing is called the divisor.  The answer is called the quotient.  When your answer is not a whole but has some part leftover, the leftover part is called the remainder.
RULES FOR DIVIDING INTEGERS

positive divided by a positive = a positive

positive divided by a negative = a negative

negative divided by a positive = a negative

negative divided by a negative = a positive

EXAMPLES

16 4 = 4

16   (-4) = -4

-16   4 = -4

(-16) (-4) = 4

In simpler term   (like terms) positive/positive and negative/negative the answer is positive -- (unlike terms) positive/negative or negative/positive the answer is negative.  Also in our number system zero cannot be a divisor.  Anything divided by zero is undefined.  Zero divided by zero is called indeterminant.

Examples

Problem: Mr. Smith owes $15,000 in rent.  Each one of his 3 sons are willing to pay an equal share of their fathers debt.  How much will each of Mr. Smith's sons pay?

Solution: -15,000 / +3 = -5,000  Each of Mr. Smith's sons will pay $5,000

Problem: Ms. Painter has 350 pieces of candy, if she wants to share an equal amount of candy with each of her 25 students, how many pieces will each student get?

Solution: +350 / +25 = +14  So each student will receive 14 pieces of candy.

On Your Own

3) +24 / -12 =
2) -27 / +3 = 4) -91 / -13 =
