Multiplying Integers |
Objective: Multiply integers | Vocabulary: multiplicand, multiplier, product, multiplicative identity |
Multiplication is repeated addition. The number being multiplied is called the multiplicand. The number doing the multiplying is called the multiplier. The answer is called the product. |
Symbols
used to indicate multiplication:
8 X 5 Times sign 8 * 5 Raised dot 8(5) or (8)5 or (8)(5) Parentheses 8y means 8 times y xy means x times y

Rules for Multiplying Integers |
1. A positive number times a positive number equals a positive number. 1. 5 X 4 = 20 2. A positive number times a negative number equals a negative number. 2. 5 x (-4) = -20 3. A negative number times a positive number equals a negative number. 3. -5 x (4) = -20 4. A negative number times a negative number equals a positive number. 4. -5 x (-4) = 20 In simpler terms: Like signs multiplied together the answer is positive. Unlike signs multiplied together the answer is negative. |
When zero
is multiplied by any number, the result is zero. Example 4 x 0 = 0
When 1 is multiplied by any number, the result is the number itself. One is called the multiplicative identity. Example - 4 x 1 = - 4 |
