Subtracting Integers

Objective:  To subtract integers.

Vocabulary:  Integers, Difference
Subtraction is the opposite of addition.  The result of subtraction is called the difference.

Rules For Subtracting Integers

To subtract one integer from another:

1.  Change the sign of the number to be subtracted (the second number).  If the second number is positive, make it a negative.  If the number is negative, make it positive.

2.  Add the first number to the changed second number.  Follow the rules of addition.

In other words, to subtract, add the opposite.

Example:   Subtract 18 - (-15) =

Step 1:  Change the sign of the number to be subtracted ( the second number).

                        (-15) becomes 15

Step 2:  Add the first number to the changed second number.

                      18 + 15 = 33

              The answer is 33.

Subtract Add The Opposite Sum
+9 - +9 = +9 + -9 = 0
+9 - -6 = +9 + +6 = +15
-12 - +4 = -12 + -4 = -16
-10 - -6 = -10 + +6 = -4

Subtract Add The Opposite Sum
-12 - +3 = -12 + -3 = -15
+12 - -9 = +12 + +9 = +21
-7 - +15 = -7 + -15 = -22
-19 - -23 = -19 + +23 = +4

On Your Own

+11 - -8 = -9 - +14
-13 - +5 = +6 - +9 =
